A new school year has begun! The computer lab has been a very exciting and productive place! My students have been busy taking digital pictures to use in presentations to showplace their school and friends. Other students are producing mini movies using animation clips created in GIMP and Windows Movie Maker. Still others are actively learning all about Word, Paint, and Power Point.

What a cool presentation tool! And it’s free! I saw this demonstrated last summer and loved it. I’m still trying to figure it out, but I’m determined to get the hang of it. Check out Web 2.0 below made with Prezi.

TED

TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a non-profit organization devoted to ideas worth spreading. Check it out here. Below is one of the latest speakers…Tom Wujec. I found it quite interesting!

I’ve been working with lots of Google tools lately. I started this months ago, but lately got re-energized at a workshop I attended. I am impressed with all the free applications offered by Google…bookmarks, reader, calendar, gmail, and docs to name a few. I set up an iGoogle homepage that keeps things organized and easily accessable. I can log onto the web anywhere and have all my information readily available. Collaboration with others is a breeze. Google is more than a search engine and definitely worth looking into!

LACUE

I attended the Louisiana Association of Computer Using Educators (LACUE) on Thursday and Friday. It was great! The keynote speakers, Kevin Baillie and Ryan Tudhope, were awesome. Their story was very inspirational and motivational. Leslie Fisher, a spotlight presenter, was back again and did a great job entertaining and teaching me about social networking and software. There were a ton of sessions to choose from, including Twitter, podcasting, SMARTboards, document cameras, webcams, wikis, Nings, Skype, and many more…at times it was hard to make a decision. It was wonderful to collaborate and share ideas with other professionals from all over the state. It truly helped me with one of my goals for the year…grow and use my Personal Learning Network (PLN)! I met some wonderful, interesting, and intelligent people. I hope to continue attending this conference yearly. I also hope to attend the national tech conference, ISTE, in Denver this summer!

Here are the second round of short animation movies my 7th graders created. This group has been working with GIMP and Windows Movie Maker for about a week. I was impressed with the results.

I got introduced to Voice Thread at a technology conference (NECC) in Washington, DC this summer. I’m just now getting around to learning more! I hope to get comfortable enough to try this collaborative tool with my Middle School students soon. Let me know what you think.
